Taldy Kurgan Complex
The Taldy Kurgan Complex is an archaeological monument of the Saka culture period, consisting of several kurgans surrounded by the remains of ancient settlements. These kurgans were burial structures symbolizing the social status and influence of the buried individuals. The complex is famous for the discovery of the 'Golden Man,' a symbol of the wealth and grandeur of the Saka epoch.
The complex is located in the steppes of the Akmola region, approximately 120 kilometers southeast of the city of Kokshetau. 51.5044° N 73.1023° E
The kurgan complex dates back to the VII–III centuries BC, during the Saka culture period. These nomadic tribes were known for their masterful gold processing, complex social structure, and rich culture. In 1969, an archaeological expedition discovered the remains of a Saka warrior in one of the kurgans, adorned with gold plates and clothing, indicating his high status. This artifact became known as the 'Golden Man.'
The Taldy Kurgan Complex is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the serial object 'Saryarka – Steppes and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan' for the following reasons:
- It is an outstanding example of a sacral landscape reflecting the development of nomadic civilizations in Central Asia.
- The object demonstrates unique archaeological evidence of the culture and socio-political structure of ancient societies living in the territory of Kazakhstan.
