ALZHIR Memorial and Museum Complex

    The ALZHIR Museum and Memorial Complex – the Akmola Camp for Wives of Traitors to the Motherland – is dedicated to the memory of the victims of political repression during the totalitarian era. It is a haunting yet important place that vividly illustrates the absurdity of war and the blind tyranny of so-called "leaders of the people."

    From 1938 to 1953, more than 18,000 women were imprisoned here.

    Today, the museum displays commemorative plaques from various embassies, symbolic compositions with deep meaning, the famous "Arch of Sorrow," where visitors traditionally bow their heads, as well as memorial steles, a "Stalinist railway car," and a barracks where convicted women once lived.
